History of Science Matters in Illinois

Originally called Building a Presence for Science, Science Matters in Illinois was launched in 2001 with support from the Exxon Mobil Foundation and the Illinois State Board of Education. Key Leaders were identified by the first Illinois State Coordinator, Gwen Pollack. Diana Dummit replaced Gwen and in 2005 Mary Lou Lipscomb became the state coordinator.

In the early years Science Matters in Illinois focused on teacher professional development; emphasizing clarification, understanding, and use of the Illinois State Science Standards for curriculum and lesson planning; and using scientific inquiry in the classroom.

Currently the focus of Science Matters-Illinois is on informing teachers and others interested in science education about professional development opportunities, opportunities for students, grant and award opportunities, and other information of interest. The Network News is sent monthly.
